A wedding isn’t exactly the kind of occasion where frugality is appreciated by many. But then, when extravagant expenses can be so high that said expenses actually start to eat into savings that can allow for a happily married life, someone needs to be a little sensible about saving money somewhere.
Below are tips to save money on weddings.
Any day but Saturday!
Saturdays are the traditional wedding days. Because they are that way, demand for wedding venues, caterers, photographers and just about anybody associated with a wedding is very high, with high prices to match, on Saturdays.
If you can move your wedding day to a week day or even a Sunday, you are going to easily save 10% to 15% off your wedding expense, almost right off the bat. This is a particularly helpful tip if you are going to keep your guest list small. When you only have a few close guests coming, they will not complain about having to come to your wedding right after work, if it is on a weekday.
You will also generally save money if your wedding can be wrapped up quicker, possibly allowing the venue owner to accommodate another ceremony in the same day. You can do all the things you can do in a 5 hour wedding in a three hour wedding. Think of it as a power packed fun ceremony!
Give an amateur photographer a chance
Just because someone isn’t a professional wedding photographer doesn’t mean that they can’t take great wedding snaps. Everyone takes time to establish themselves and hiring an up and coming photographer could mean that your photography budget is slashed in half, maybe by more.
Even the most amateur photographers will have extensive portfolios for you to review and decide if you should take your chances with them.
Besides saving on the photographer, you could look at saving on the photographs itself. Print photographs cost a lot of money, especially when you want the really high-end finishes. Instead, you can just opt for digital albums. If you really want to have print photos later, you can always print out a choice few for very little money!
Pick a venue without strings attached
Most businesses that rent out wedding venues are very savvy, tying in a requirement that you will have to use the in-house photographer, catering and even the DJ. While such accompanied services might indeed be of great quality, you can definitely do better when it comes to prices, if you were able to bring in your own choice of companies to do the catering, DJ’ing etc.
So, when you go venue hunting for your special date, try not to fall in love with the charm of a place until you here about their in-house arrangements.
Reception and ceremony at the same venue? Why not?
While having the ceremony at one place and a reception at another place with all the exciting commute in between is tradition that is fun in its own way, it takes just a little bit of effort to make both occasions happen in the same place.
All you need is a few fun family and friends who can make the transition a non-awkward experience! You will save on transportation and probably also on catering and DJ costs, as nobody has to really move anywhere.
Live with the fact that you don’t need to impress anyone!
If you love beautiful weddings because you want to remember the occasion as a special one, then by all means go and splurge on yourself and your partner. But, if you are only throwing a great wedding so your guests will be impressed, you might want to do a rethink.
When the wedding is over, people will go away. They might talk about it for a few days, maybe weeks, maybe months at the most. After that, it doesn’t really matter when you think about it.
There have been thousands and thousands of couples who have had nothing but a courthouse wedding, only with the closest of family and friends, having used the resulting savings to have the kind of honeymoon that other average couples can only dream of! Some have even managed to put down such savings as down payment for a home!
Yes, wedding savings can be extraordinary and you know it is a fact!
Dinner doesn’t have to sit down!
It isn’t a rule anywhere that says that a wedding dinner involves beautiful silverware, silk napkins, classy china or any of that. How about a fun barbecue? Sushi? There have been people who have even made one huge potluck out of a wedding dinner!
After all, there is nothing as tasty as home cooked food. Just make sure you ask the right people to make the food if you are taking this route. The last thing you want is an amateur cook serving up sloppy food.
The cake is fake!
Cakes are insanely expensive when it comes to wedding cakes. All that intricate work and the layers upon layers to make it look like a stunning cake will cost huge money, sometimes easily costing even thousands.
What if you could have all that without the expense? A fake cake is how. With a fake cake, several layers of the cake are, well, fake, with only the top layer real. That way, the cake cutting is real. The cake can then be whisked away behind closed doors and a cake of the same flavor but without all the glamour can be served up for the guests.
Besides these tips, there are almost countless ways to save on a wedding.
Doing your own flowers by buying flowers in bulk and having someone decorate them for you is one way. Using fake flowers is another way. Using no flowers at all is a big way to save money. If the venue is beautiful by itself, why flowers at all?!
When it comes to wedding dresses, use a family wedding dress. The women who got married in that dress, like your mom, sister or even your grandmother for that matter will be ecstatic that you made that decision. If not for something from the family, you can even rent a wedding dress or buy a used wedding dress. You will find wedding dresses starting on eBay for just $50.
When people plan a wedding, they usually have money set aside for a wedding. What you can do is aggressively use your credit card to pay for all the wedding expenses and then used your wedding budget cash to pay off your credit card.
That way, you have a lot of reward points that get tacked on to your card. Reward points that can probably be instantly used for that discounted or even free air ticket to your honeymoon destination!
